The Ionian Conference 2000 was jointly organised by EPIC, the British Council in Greece, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and the Goethe Institut. It was held the Achilleon Palace in Corfu, Greece, from 19 - 22 May 2000.

The aim of the conference was to bring together a small group of outstanding researchers from different disciplines within the social sciences. In informal and intensive debates, they were to discuss and compare research focusing on the structural changes taking place in the European society at all levels and on ways to manage these changes.

Another aim of the conference was to form a base for ongoing comparative research, research networking and for the dissemination of the results of such research. It would enhance international and interdisciplinary co-operation between these young researchers and would, hence, provide them with access to new and extensive sources of information.

Discussions took place in the following three thematic groups:

· Social inequality and discrimination, racism and gender in European societies
· Technology and employment, new ways of organising production and labour
· Governance and citizenship in the European Union - the influence of culture
